How to Care for Dried Flowers

How to Care for Dried Flowers
Dried flowers are a beautiful, natural way to bring long-lasting joy into your home. With their delicate textures, muted tones, and organic shapes, they add a gentle touch of nature to any space — without the need for constant maintenance. However, like any natural product, dried flowers need a little care to ensure they stay looking their best for as long as possible. Here’s my simple guide to caring for your dried flowers:
1. Keep Them Dry
This might seem obvious, but it’s the most important rule. Dried flowers don’t like moisture. Keep them away from humid areas such as bathrooms, kitchens, or next to open windows where rain may blow in. If they do get wet, they may go limp, lose their colour or even grow mould.
2. Avoid Direct Sunlight
Although dried flowers are already beautifully faded, direct sunlight can cause them to become overly brittle and lose their natural colour more quickly. Place your flowers in a spot that gets indirect light or in a shadier part of the room to preserve their beauty.
3. Dust Gently
Over time, dried flowers can collect dust. The best way to clean them is to gently blow off any dust using a hairdryer on a cool, low setting. Alternatively, you can use a soft makeup brush to carefully dust the petals and stems. Avoid using any water or cleaning products as this will damage them.
4. Minimal Handling
Dried flowers are delicate and can shed or crumble if handled too often. Try to place them somewhere they can be admired without the need to be moved frequently. If you do need to reposition them, handle them gently from the stem.
5. Keep Away from Heat Sources
Avoid placing your dried flowers near radiators, fireplaces, or other sources of heat. The intense heat can cause them to dry out even further, making them more brittle and prone to breaking.
6. Longevity Expectations
Dried flowers don’t last forever — and that’s part of their charm. Depending on the variety and where they’re displayed, they can last anywhere from a few months to several years. Over time, some natural fading and shedding is completely normal, adding to their rustic beauty. When they’ve finally lived their life, they can be composted — a beautiful, earth-friendly circle of life.
7. Store Carefully if Rotating Displays
If you like to rotate your floral displays through the seasons, consider storing your dried flowers in a sturdy box lined with tissue paper when not in use. Keep them in a cool, dark, and dry place to avoid discolouration or damage.
8. Embrace Their Evolution
One of the most beautiful things about dried flowers is how they change over time. Colours may soften, shapes may shift, and textures may evolve. Rather than seeing this as a flaw, embrace it as part of their natural story — a reminder of slow, seasonal beauty that continues long after they’ve been cut.
